I think the bolts that hold the torque converter onto the "flywheel" are
removed from the front of the flywheel, i.e. the engine block side?

You will need to remove the inspection plate on the lower half of the front
of the gearbox bell housing.  You should then see a couple of the torque
converter bolts in the flywheel.  Loosen them and spin the flywheel  until
all bolts are revealed and removed. Then the torque converter comes off to
reveal the bolts holding the driven plate (flywheel) to the crankshaft.

I think this is how it goes.
