Tim,
What you've done doesn't necessarily result in bad handling rather it
induces bump steer - some would say that's the same thing but I tend to
disagree. What may be worth a though to remedy your situation is to fit
spacers at the bottom of the strut. seeing as your xmember is lowered by
only 20mm this should be in range to correct the lower control arm angles.
Errol may have some of these that would be suitable and also some advice for
you.

Subject: lowered crossmember=bad handling
the reason for my resent questions regarding adjustable castor and
camber bits is because my 1600 has a lowered crossmember by 20mm to
fit the z24 motor under the bonnet. (has been like that for two years)
I have been told that this bad handling is called bump steer and is
caused by the lower control arms which are sitting level and slightly
up.
and i have been told they need to sit down below the cross member
level plane for correct suspension operation and if this true how can
be achieved
i thought of shortening the cross member engine mounts to make the
engine to sit lower that way
I was told what by giving changing the castor and camber angles can
give it better handling but i think that's just a band aid solution
if possible i want it fixed for good so I can actually enjoy driving
my datto again
