I didn't realise the high beams work as a pair. What do the 1200's run? Would I be able to replace my 4xsealed lights for 2x H4 style with the appropriate lens. What are the ADR's you are referring to? You don't know a site that has them?
Thanks for the info. Don't you do much work at work? You seem to be doing lots of typing today.

Adam,

Light and webers are very topical at the moment.

I'm not picking on you but let's go back to basics on quad 4.75" headlights as it will help you understand why what you wanted to do is illegal and also give you an idea on how to get around it and be legal.

There are 2 spec on 1600 i.e. Japanese (import wagons etc) and Oz spec.

Outers are the same for both i.e. 37.5w/50w sealed beam, Lucas make 37.5/60w but hard to get here now - total low beam 100w or 120w
Inners for Japanese models are 37.5w and Oz models are 50w (Lucas) both sealed beams - total high beam Jap spec 150w or Oz spec 175w

The design of refractor on quad 4.75"outer lights is the problem as they are only approved by ADR to be used on the street in pairs (i.e. inner & outer). Outer 4.75" lights are very different to a 7" sealed beam as found on early Holdens, they are still crap but legal on their own. The 4.75" outer light high beam is a flood, even 100w cibies will only light up 100m in front on a very dark night and that fails Oz ADR specs. There are rules about the number of low beams as you have statedas if youhave 4 outers like you did but that aside even with 4 Cibie 100w H4 bulbs you wouldstill fail. You would have a brilliant low beam that would cause too much glare for oncoming traffic and still have a lousy penetration with high beam - might look different but that's the story.

what can you do if you want to remove the inners to use the holes for an intake. Not many legal options left, probably the best one is to replace the inners witha set of external drivers on the bar. Authorities will pass you with that, you'll have good lights andintake. the only problem with that setup if you get a cluey inspector that knows his stuff (they're out there and I run into them for some reason) is if you fit a dash switch to disable the drivers as is customary and therefore have the capability of running just the outer high beams, technically that's illegal for the ADR spec.

Terry
