Thanks
everybody for you help. Replacement ball joints have seen an end to all my
brake problems ( except for the nice little groves I have left in my newly
machined discs) . If any one is curious I have them mounted to the
rear of the car like the 1600 ones, I don't know how to identify them but
the callipers have Nissan written on them and like I said if they are on toward
the front of the car the turning circle was reduced. Thanks again for all
your help and suggestions.
Justin
I've
seen this a few times. There was a picture on the Adelaide website showing the
damage that can happen to a disc that had the backing plate removed which was
caused by a control arm and it's very destructive.
It
usually occurs when you go from the longer 71-72/1600 struts to
200B/240K and on the problem car I saw the balljoints were
totally shot. The static clearance between the backing plate and the control
arm is ~1/8-3/16" and the clearance from the backing plate to the disc is
~3/16" - 1/4" so you can see how much movement the balljoints have to
have in them for contact to occur. If the play in the balljoints is bad enough
then the risk of getting rid of the backing plate is that the control arm will
just munch the disc and I wouldn't recommend that you do this. Some ppl with
lowered front ends have taken 1/8" off the end of the control arms and this
seems to have no detrimental effect.

Terry

they do jack $hite anyway.

Subject: Datsun 1600 Front Struts
HELP !!
Hi All,
I recently put some Datsun 200B Struts into my
1600. I was told that they would fit but some 13" wheels wouldn't
because of the big callipers. Well my wheels fit and after some pain
I have another problem: The backing plate for the disk is rubbing on
the disk on corners and some bumps. It is being pushed on to the
disk by the lower control arm I think. Has any body done
this mod before and if so did they have this problem or have they heard of
it and do they know if there is any thing I can do to fix it. I am
going to have to go back to the 1600 struts if I cant fix this but I don't
really want to because I have completely refitted the 200B struts
(bearings, pads, disks machined, GT gas, etc..)
Any advise would be
appreciated,
Thanks
