More info on that PL510 V8 from David in the
U.S.A. ;
"I haven't put it on a dyno
but in stock form the motor makes 180HP. I would say that it is around
200HP.
I am about to build a larger version of this
motor using the Rover 4.0 block and a Buick 300 crank and heads.
With oversized pistons this
will be a 5.0 litre motor and should make a conservative
300HP."
You might be right Malcolm, what does the
Commonwhore supercharged V6 output?
The VG30DETT is a popular swap in the U.S.
although I'm told it's a bit of a tight fit.

hopefully I can get the whole front cut with gear box for under
$500,,(priced to suit full rebuild)

That's David's Weitz's car. I stayed with him and his
family when I visited the east coast last year and got to ride in his 510.
It's really torquey from low speed and sounds awesome. The Rover motor
fits in there really nicely and I should think the weight isn't all that
much greater than most four cylinders...the handling certainly doesn't
seem to suffer at all. He has got some pretty trick headers on it
though... they would be very hard to make. I can get block hugger headers
for them here which would probably work on a 510 install. I had a Rover V8
in a Datsun 280C a few years ago and although on paper the output
doesn't look that much different to an L28 it was heaps faster than a
stock one.
If you start comparing the Rover V8 to American V8's it
looks really feeble but forget about it being a V8...just look at the
wieght saving and the fact you can buy a ton of tuning stuff for them
(well, here in the UK anyway). There are many Rovers here in the 400bhp+
region. I probably wouldn't go this route myself a I like screamer
four cylinder motors but it's an interesting and different
conversion.

Hey listers,
I was enquiring about a front spoiler from
the US described as the "ultimate 510 air dam"
Unfortunately it is $500 Australian plus
postage so I passed on that one!
However the guy selling them said he had a
2-door 72 Datsun 510 3.5 V-8 (soon to be 5.0 V-8)!
The motor is an Oldsmobile 215CI V-8.
It is the same as the Rover motor (you know, the
all alloy unit they put in
Triumph TR8s and stuff).
I asked
him to send some photos, which he obliged so if anyone is interested,
I'll post them
on the Ozdat upload section.
I just can't remember or find the link to
do the upload. How is it done?
I have the password etc.
Regards
Rob P
