Seized locks

Today I was driving and my mate was jumping out of the car (actually, getting out of the car) and he couldn’t close the door. It seemed like the door handle was in some kind of a limbo so I fiddled with it and it closed. I the proceeded to lock the door (from the inside) which needed a bit of force, which is quite unusual. Anyone got any ideas how to actually open the door, as I cant pull the door apart until it is open… (Ie its locked and wont open with or without a key).
