Ifr the gearbox is out of the car then you do the turn and count trick.Slip on a clutch plate and mark it with some whiteout and mark the output shaft aswell,slip it into first and count how many revolutions it take of the input to turn the output one revolution.If its under 3 revs then youve found a close ratio box.Most close ratio boxes are somewhere around 2.6-2.8 in first.You can check all the gears this way including top to see if it has 1 to 1 top or overdrive.You should be able to see thru the filler plug hole for any straight cut gears.There are so many variations of c/r boxes.Errol should be able to tell what it is by the ratios.
