The idea is to use an 8 volt coil and punch 12 volts through it when you
have a cold start. This gives a better spark at the plugs and makes it
start easier. When the resistor gets warm, it cuts the input voltage to
the coil back to 8 volts and you have a normal secondary ignition
circuit. That's why you find coils marked as "use with resistor". Run
one of those without a resistor and it won't last too long.

Dave,

The ignition resister is inside of the white ceramic block that sits
near the coil on a 1600 and it's purpose is to reduce the voltage across
the points by around 1/3 of battery voltage, the idea is to prolong the
contact surfaces and it sort of works all things equal. It just could be
that this is your problem as there is a heat related element involved
here i.e. an open circuit or high resistant connection will allow the
engine to fire, but it will not continue to run when the start circuit
is not running (i.e. via the ignition key). As part of routine
maintenance once in a while it certainly doesn't hurt to pull the
resister apart and clean up the connections - you'll need an 8mm spanner
if it's a stock item on your car.

regards
Terry

I've been meaning to ask about this. All the coils I've been using have
``Use with resistor'' printed on them.

How do I check this resistor? I have no idea what/where is it.
Thanks,

Dave
