My Father-in-law bought his "Last" car in 1974. He had just retired and felt
that he must be frugal.

The result was the "Special Edition" 1974 Mercury Monarch, stick, tiny 6cyl, no
P/S a local dealer had on the lot. Remember those? They like to compare them
to 12?'s in the ads, what a joke!

Pretty good looking, in a 70's way. Maroon 2 door coupe, it did have an Am
radio!

Design fault, the clutch (same as used on a Pinto!), was so small that it had a
life expectancy of 10,000 miles. Of course as usual on that engine, there was
very little oil flow to the rockers. The head hardware would last about 20Kmi.
It was a whale to drive, very hard to park. It's the only car I ever "Broke"
the steering box in, car was too heavy for it I guess.

I inherited it at about 35Kmi, never registered it. Sold it in a big hurry.

Pete
