Our 77 Monarch was a nice looking car, as you say, in a 70's way. It was a bit boxy and the wind would push it around on the highway but I always liked the look and it had good visibility out in all directions which is more than one can say for some of the current cars.
It was a 2 door - white with a white quarter vinyl top and a burgundy interior. It had bucket seats and the floor shifter but was an automatic. It had the thick leather covered steering wheel. It had steel spoked wheels with trim rings. It was the big inline 6 and had things like power steering but no AC. As I said, it actually looked pretty good but lord it handled awful. He had just retired and felt that he must be frugal. The result was the "Special Edition" 1974 Mercury Monarch, stick, tiny 6cyl, no P/S a local dealer had on the lot. Remember those? They like to compare them to 12?'s in the ads, what a joke! Pretty good looking, in a 70's way. Maroon 2 door coupe, it did have an Am radio! Design fault, the clutch (same as used on a Pinto!), was so small that it had a life expectancy of 10,000 miles. Of course as usual on that engine, there was very little oil flow to the rockers. The head hardware would last about 20Kmi. It was a whale to drive, very hard to park. It's the only car I ever "Broke" the steering box in, car was too heavy for it I guess. I inherited it at about 35Kmi, never registered it. Sold it in a big hurry.
