I had that experience with a small block Pontiac motor where I couldn't use a Chevy 350 trans but instead it was a Olds 350 transmission. Something different with the bellhousings and where the engine bolts up was different. Buick and Pontiac back in the 70's and early 80's used a turbo hydramatic 200, the metric trans they called it. junk I call it

as late as the late 70s there were some substantial differences between
identical GM cars, most obvious being that each division had their own
engines. in other words, a chevy, olds and buick 350 were all different
engines. other little things included such idiosyncrasies as buick not
letting chevy build turbo 350 transmissions for them, but building them in
house from kits.
