I would suggest opening the roof, removing the chrome rails, unclipping the headliner, and then pulling the headliner out through the opening. This will let you see the operating bits including the lift angles and translation bridge where the cable is attached. You may just have a loose cable clamp (if one side is unscrewed, it will pull back but going forward the cable will just snake sideways.
You can then operate the switch while manually moving the roof forward, and push it up flush fairly easily. Main point of failure is the lift angles, they snap and will cause the roof to get sideways and stick. Next most common failure is the cable coming loose, I think. You can get the headliner down through the opening, but you are quite likely to bend it beyond repair that way.
