All the documentation I've ever seen indicates it to be an Italian 4 banger. Fuel economy.gov rates it at 21-26 which may not seem like much but the 4cyl gasser is rated for 20-24 with a 6 speed while the diesel only gets a 5. The auto 6cyl gasser is 17-22 which in my experience is a bit low. My parents have a pair of those right now and I've seen them do 25mpg on a long highway ride so I'd guess driven conservatively the diesel could do closer to 30mpg.
Of course I'm the guy with the 240D that gets 28mpg consistantly. -Curt Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 19:53:40 -0500 From: Peter Frederick <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] Daimler Chrysler diesel & hybrid prediction for US market To: Mercedes mailing list <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed The new Liberty diesel is, you guessed it, a Detroit 16:1 four banger with a monster turbocharger, shakes like crazy, rattles like it has ball bearings loose in the combustion chambers, and gets all of 21 mpg -- a recipe for lack of sales if I ever saw one. What happened to the five cylinder turbo 605? Peter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
