The Chinese cheapen the shoes by replacing the leather or fabric inner liner with paper and they wear out from the inside. Also, the rubber they use has more filler.
I wear boots and the local shoe shop showed me this the last time I brought in a couple of pairs for heels. I probably only got 8-9 months out of them. I'm on my second pair of Colombias now, the first pair went 2 years in almost daily wear. The new pair was 2/3 the price of the first but still look like new after 6 months. -Curt Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2008 23:26:51 -0700 From: Tyler Backman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [MBZ] Harbor Freight wrenches impress To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed; delsp=yes Yep, I've always re-purchased the same Red Wing boot, and they used to last me 3 years while a normal work boot would last less than 1. My most recent pair (same model, same size, similar level of usage) literally fell apart after only 6 months, and I found out that Red Wings are now mass-produced in china from low grade leather, with cardboard even though they look the same as the ones they've always made. My wife bought me a pair of Vibergs instead (http://www.viberg.com/ - no affiliation) which are MUCH better made than even the old Red Wings ever were, and have been made the same in Victoria BC by the same family of master boot makers since the 30s. I wouldn't be surpised if they do last as long as a W123 diesel. I've heard that the other red-wing owned shoe companies (Worx, Irish Setter, and Vasque) have also gone downhill.
