I think I would tear into the engine further before deciding to buy a head. You 
mention a knock lower in the engine
and obviously it will be an unhappy experience to bolt on a new head and 
determine that it needs further work as
soon as you fire it up. A replacement engine sounds like it might be the most 
inexpensive route.

A new head was about $900 a few years back.  Used ones are out there too, I'd 
do that before looking for a used
engine.
