LT, Don't go too rough at all, an open-handed slap or two on the cheek should be sufficient.
Seriously, I just used a pliers to put a few bite marks on the end of the shaft, and it was REALLY tough to drive home. You don't need very much roughness at all, and once you see how tight the access to it is you probably will be reluctant to attempt to use locktite or anything else. This is one of those repairs where getting to the offending parts is more difficult than the actual repair.
