The engine in my 1983 300TD is starts quickly, and runs smoothly and quietly save for this peculiar ticking noise. It's like a sewing machine! At first i thought it was the speedo cable but I hear it at idle as well. What could be the cause of this? I'm not complaining but I do need to know if something needs attention. Also, what are the symptoms in a W123 turbodiesel for 1) worn differential and 2) worn drive shaft?
