It's beyond hope on those aspects, you need to unload it fast in these bad economic times before it craps out and all you can get is scrap value. I'll give you $500 for it, get rid of your headache.

Plug a microphone into your laptop (or it might have one built in). Or
maybe use your phone if it has a recording feature (like for voice memos) --
most of them now have that.

Record it using what instrument? I am sort of mid-20th century in my

Could you record it digitally and then ask Lt. Don to post it on his
website? That would be helpful. My OM617 ('85 SD) used to make a noise I
described as a sewing machine noise. Never figured out what it was and it
eventually went away. Was a faint noise, but it was there.

Idea...an audio library on okiebenz.com of odd sounds for diagnostic
purposes. Kaleb would just have to post them...we could e-mail him the
sounds as they come up in our cars. That might be useful. Just a thought.

Subject: [MBZ] Ticking noise in a diesel?

The engine in my 1983 300TD is starts quickly, and runs smoothly and
quietly
save for this peculiar ticking noise. It's like a sewing machine! At
first
i thought it was the speedo cable but I hear it at idle as well. What
could
be the cause of this? I'm not complaining but I do need to know if
something needs attention.
Also, what are the symptoms in a W123 turbodiesel for 1) worn
differential
and 2) worn drive shaft?
