The big three have built smaller cars here in the states. They tried

My opinion on Saturn: It WAS a company that made some of the most efficient sedans and wagons in America. Now it's just another badge engineered sales division of GM. There's nothing an Ion can do that a Cobalt can't do, and the rest of the line up isn't especially compatible with the phrase "fuel efficient".

In the 90's, lots of people bought SLs, SWs, and SCs, partly for the no hassle pricing and partly for the 35-40mpg hwy ratings. Some of those customers loved the cars and bought more when the old ones wore out, others hated the lack of noise control and shied away from Saturn after one plastic bodied experience. Myself, I came pretty close to buying a 1998 stick shift SC2 last summer, but it had more wrong with it than I wanted to deal with, and I didn't drive enough for the 35-40mpg to mean that much to me even at $3.50 a gallon.
