I lived in north western Ontario for my first driving years and did not have 4 wheel drive then. One learns to make do with what one has. I was rarely stuck despite the fact that we got a lot of snow and the area is hilly. BUT having now experienced 4 wheel drive, I would not want to go back to just 2 wheel drive all of the time. That is fine when the conditions are not too bad but the 4 wheel drive sure helps when things are real bad out.
