I lived in north western Ontario for my first driving years and did not have 4
wheel drive then. One learns to make
do with what one has. I was rarely stuck despite the fact that we got a lot of
snow and the area is hilly. BUT
having now experienced 4 wheel drive, I would not want to go back to just 2
wheel drive all of the time. That is
fine when the conditions are not too bad but the 4 wheel drive sure helps when
things are real bad out.

I lived in the MI UP near The Soo for 4 years; never had any 4WD; did fine
with '71 Chrysler st. wag. and '64 Dodge van; drove on packed snow and ice
several months every year with Sears/Michelin steel belted radials - no snow
tires and no chains.
