This brings up an important point - be careful about your employer trying to 
foist a non-compete or some other arrangement that would prevent you from doing 
something competitive.  Since they're laying you off it would be difficult for 
them to do, but that's not to say they wouldn't try.

I had a former employer try this when they RIF'ed me, and I refused to sign the 
paper.  It was a part of my severance package, but when I balked they backed 
down.
