Ed, I just got a Western Digital 1 terabyte My Book Essential a few weeks ago. It is an external USB 2. I used it to back up my old laptop which is USB 1. So it works on both 1 and 2 though it is a lot faster on 2. Best Buy had them on sale a bit ago and may still. I think it was $129. Not bad for what it can hold and if you need one to be USB and transportable.

I don't know about the Mac part but if the Mac uses the Fat32 or NTFS then it should be able to read and write to this disk. It comes formatted in Fat32 but reformatting in XP wasn't a big deal and didn't take long. The video, picture and Mp3 stuff are all just files and transfered as files and shouldn't be hardware dependent on a hard drive. I didn't use a backup program so I had no problems that way. You probably won't either unless you are going to use a backup program and it for some reason won't read or write those files, or if the Mac uses a different file system. Others will probably know more about that. I haven't been back to Apple since my II+ days. Probably should revisit it but PCs seem to be a bit less expensive then similarly equipped Apples.

What I would like to do, is get an external HD and start backing up
everything from several old computers on it. My other pc, was an old
 one
with a first generation usb port, so I'd like to find one that reads
 all the
way back to 1.0. Anyone suggest a brand? Needs to read mp3 files,
 photos,
vids, etc from both older pc and mac op systems.

Thanks,

Ed
