One.  It's a little black crescent shaped cover on the back of the alternator.  
Takes two straight bladed screws to remove it.  When you take out the old one, 
you'll see what everyone is talking about, as the brush holder/brushes are a 
part of the unit, and there won't be much of anything left of the brushes.

The new one goes in the opposite of how the old one came out - sort of put it 
at a 45 degree angle and rotate it into place so the brushes seat on the slip 
rings, then tighten the screws.  There will be some pressure from the new 
brushes that will give some resistance to getting it in place, so be prepared.  
An offset screwdriver works really nice in this situation.

You can do this from underneath the car if you get it up on ramps or 
jackstands.  It's all of a half hour job, and much of that is just getting 
everything together.
