Starting to think this might be the alternator itself after all.

I drove the car over the noon hour and though the alternator lamp was initially
lit it went out after a few minutes of driving. When I arrived at lunch and
parked, I noticed a rattling sound accompanied by intermittent squeeking. I
opened the hood and it seemed to be coming from the alternator. The belts were
tight but it looked like the alternator pully was wobbling a little. Sort of
hard to tell in that setting, but before I go buy a new regulator I am going to
remove the belts and see if the alternator spins freely and has any signs of
worn out bearings.
