Right, I gutted the tandem pump and the noise and vibration are still
present, time to shoot the bitch. What sort of shot should I use?
Anyway this makes me think that the pump is not the culprit, now it's
onto the fan belt tensioner, although it is only a few months old, maybe
try a new tensioner dampener, as it is pretty old.
Ooooh the joys of working on cars.....

OK so I put a new seal kit in the tandem pump but the noise is still
there, new hose from MB is 570 oz beans and they come from Germany.
The reason I am talking hose is that I rebuilt the original high
pressure expansion hose after it blew a hole in it. Everything was
sweet for a while but then this noise started.
My plan now is to take the guts out of the tandem pump (the little
pistons out of the SLS part and vanes out of the PS part) to see if
this eliminates the noise.
I have tried to find a SH hose but have not have much luck locally.
Does anyone see a problem with removing those parts out of the pump
and then running it?

Both fluids full up? Growling is usually cavitation from lack of
fluid. If fluids are full, start looking for a pump, I guess. The
pumps can be rebuilt, but getting the new seal in is a bear. I
ruined one, so my rebuild cost me $160 for the 2 kits. To get a kit,
you have to have all the info off the pump plate as well as the VIN.

The tandem pump in my 89 300TE makes a growling noisy and vibrates
at 1300rpm, fine at idle and above 1500rpm.
Got the missus to turn the steering wheel while I held the motor at
1300rpm but made no difference to the noise. Power steering is fine
and ride level control seems to be working OK, fluid is being pumped
as I can see it flowing back into the reservoir.
Is this noise an indication that the pump is heading south, are
there any other tests I can do?
I eliminated the AC compressor but it may be the water pump but like
I said the tandem pump is vibrating, whilst the water pump is not.
Ahh well the good news is that it is not the motor or the gearbox
because when the fan belt is removed the noise is gone.
Unfortunately I can't run components individually, this is an
advantage of the multi belt set up.
