You must have a different trouble shooting manual.

I'm referring to the paper ACC manual I got for my SL. Back
when you could still get paper manuals from the dealer.

It would seem that since the resistor unit, the fan, the temperature
control unit, the fan control unit, the pushbutton unit, and the
compressor are all disconnected; that I shouldn't get any heavy
current flow at the fuse terminal, and I should get zero resistance
between the listed ground wires to a frame or body ground.

Yep, that should do it. Nothing much left but wires in the chassis
at that point. Except for the sensors and vacuum actuators. Oh, and
the Klima relay perhaps. (Not exactly sure if your car has one. Too
many cars...) You could run the checklist I have:

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/mamerepairs.html

Though it's fairly weak for that particular system. Like I said, I've
only had PB problems on my cars with that system, so that's all I've
really covered. (As I learn things on broken cars I amend that page.)

If the Klima is the little plug-in relay that sits on top of the left front wheel well, then I have one. It's under a plastic snap-on cover with the relay that runs the A/C auxiliary fan. I'll unplug both of them before doing the recheck.
That checklist is very useful.
Thanks,
