Hey Bob -
Our 78 240D with completely new/rebuilt engine (still perfect after 50k miles) gets 22-24mpg's - no matter what - just like you. AC on or off - doesn;t matter - very high speed ;-) does matter some - I can run 75 easily now that the engine has ben reblt and mileage suffers *very* little.

Its an awesome car - love those W123s built like a tank. I wonder why MB didn;t go to a galvanized (sort of) steel treatment like Porsche did in '75?

It would have kept a lot more W123s on the road!

I can never get any better than 22 mpg in my '77 300D....ever. Air on (when
it used to work), air off...loaded, empty...uphill, downhill...80 mph ave or
60 mph ave.
You all are, as Napoleon Dynamite would say, "lucky".

Speaking of mileage. Our '91 300D 2.5T has been a wonderful car. Once I

We keep complte records of our mileage. Over the past 6 months or so we've been getting 28-30mpg. However, a recent fillup gave over 32 mpg. I'm not complaining about 32 but I am wondering why we got that' We've only seen 32
once or twice before in our 3 years of ownership.

I can see 28-30 being attributed to driving style - I tend to drive it a
little harder than my wife. But generally, our driving is a constant mix of highway, city, her and me. I especially wonder about the 28-32 gap - that's a difference of 14.3%. Would the fuel formulation (Winter/Summer) account
for that difference? Or is that driving style also?

Thanks gang!

When my '78 300D had about 40K miles on it, I drove it one summer day from
San Mateo CA to Redding CA in about four hours at a steady 65-70 mph. All
Interstate and close to sea level. Fuel level was topped up to the same
level
on both ends of the trip.

28.5 mpg that trip and I'm convinced that's the best it could do. BTW,
pump
timing was spot-on and the injectors were all perfect. Hell, my C300 3.0
V-6 can do better than that.
