You don't need (or want) a hard vacuum, you want a very low pressure argon atmosphere. I don't remember the exact procedure, since it was 20 years ago, but I sputter coated specimens for scanning electron microscopy back in the day. Electrons aren't heavy enough to displace metal atoms from the target, you need the argon to make the plasma so the metal atoms will migrate.
