The low pressure line is the most likely culprit. it has only hose clamps. Rusty has the OE stuff or Mcparts has 3/8" PS hose for a temp fix.

People often call the steering gear the "rack" and I assumed Dan was doing
just that.
My gearbox had never been touched - there was no need.
I'll have to give it a good cleaning an see what transpires. There is black
grime all over the gearbox. The the fluid stain is just below it,not below
the PSP as I first stated.
After I hear what you all tell me I suspect that one of the connections down
there may be leaking. Hope I can get on these fittings with an open end
wrench. Don't have tubing wrenches.

There's no steering rack in a 126. MB didn't descend to those depths until
the 90's when the accountants and marketing people took over. All
80's-and-earlier MBs used recirculating ball steering boxes.

The bit that very occasionally does leak on an MB recirculating ball
steering box, and usually ONLY after adjustment, is the pitman arm shaft
 o-ring.

When you adjust the box, the shaft changes position and this moves the
o-ring into new territory, often very rusty/grubby territory. Then you get a
leak. If the o-ring survives the ride, the leak sometimes goes away as the
 ring finds a new "groove".

W115/116/123 boxes are often neglected for decades. When they finally get
adjusted, you can have a gusher for a few weeks. As far as I can see from
the service books, most 126 (and all later models) had self-adjusting
steering, and should thus be less likely to ever leak at the shaft.
