In the last 6 years (~120,000 miles) I've had only one gelling issue. That was 
my 190D when I first got it, the fuel that was in it was clearly summer fuel. I 
idled it for ~20 minutes until the fuel in the tank warmed up some, then took 
it to a station and got a tank of good #1 and it was fine...

It helps to buy fuel from stations that sell lots of diesel - that way the 
storage tank is refreshed regularly with fuel containing seasonal 
additives - like anti-gelling agents in the winter...
