I am not convinced that proper driving habits have much effect, nor am I convinced that penetrating oil applied on the threaded end of the gp will help

I've had one snap off. I drive ... Well let's say I would get in far too much trouble with any sort of V8 MB (and leave it at that)...

I'd been applying penetrating oil for days, along with turning it through the 1/4 turn that it could move... It started to move, turned maybe 2-3 turns, then it snapped. When using a puller (with a ball-bearing thrust washer), quite a bit of torque was required to extract the remains. The remains vociferously protested extraction, fighting the whole way and screaming in a manner that nails on a blackboard can only dream about...

Yes, there is that interesting aspect when considering new glow plugs in an OM606. A fellow I know in Virginia has a very interesting theory on this problem of glow plugs breaking off too easily. He thinks that the
design of the glow plug promotes carbon build-up on the plug portion
just inside the threads, which forms a ring. This ring of carbon acts
like a compression seal in reverse; as the plug is turned
anti-clockwise, this ring of carbon compresses on the plug and prevents it from coming out of the head. My friends solution is (1) liberal use
of penetrating oil and (2) working the plug slowly in and out so that
the carbon ring can be worn down before it breaks off the plug.

I believe that proper driving habits can reverse carbon build-up, so I
may leave the glow plugs alone until I've driven the car a bit to clean
up any carbon that may have built up.

Don't do anything that would make pulling the head overly difficult
before changing glow plugs on an om606. None of your business how I
know!!!
