I've don't think you can equate *anything* meaningful from the "whoosh" - it seems to happen more when the tank is closer to empty but I *know* my tank is free of algae - ]]

It also happens on my gas cars although I'm not sure why.

Maybe an  occasionally sticking tank vent? You didn't mention opening the
filler.
