In Connecticut River Valley , we have a bunch of old barns that are 100+ years
old, used for tobacco drying. If being torn down, thay are prized for their
chestnut 10" x 10" beams. A friend was given 2 several years ago to form a
small bridge on his farm. Problem, you must use a chainsaw to cut and pre-drill
any nail holes.

When we had the kitchen remodeled, the contractor used a sawz-all during the
demolition to remove part of a wall/cabinet that we removed to expand the
kitchen. He went through two blades trying to cut through the wood. In these
old houses, the wood is so hard (because it was SLOW GROWTH wood) that is
almost impossible to cut through. I really hate new houses. We have looked a
bunch of them. They are so boring. White walls and cheap oak trim. The same
floor plans as every other house in the subdivision and the cheapest possible
methods of construction with no original features. YUCK. I don't think I will
ever buy a house built after about 1975 - unless we do a custom home one day.
