this has been a topic in the BMW Motorcycle community for some time, as BMW still only recommends SG grade oil for their motorcycles for this reason.

since old grades that meet the spec are becoming more difficult to find as oil grades continue to be modified with emissions more of a priority than actual lubrication, BMW actually has Spectro make oil for them that still meets the spec they want.

bottom line; BMW SG and Spectro tested out to be the best in this regard, though i've read Castrols European formulas were said to be close and were available by special order at good FLAPS. (i don't know if this is still the case.)
