I disagree that RTV stuff is OK for sealing anything that touches engine oil. It is specifically prohibited for turbo-diesel engines somewhere in MB literature, I think in the 1987 Introduction to Service book for the 124 diesel cars, which I don't have with me at the moment. I'm going to look that up later and provide the reference.
The reason it is prohibited is because the small pieces of RTV that can be shed will circulate with the oil (they don't settle out). If the oil bypass filter opens, those pieces of RTV can then clog the oil cooling jets which cool each piston, which results in melted/seized piston. -Max -----Original Message----- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dieselhead Sent: Friday, October 22, 2010 10:20 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OM603 oil pan breech I don't like permatex 2 because it is impossible to clean off. (the next time) The rtv stuff is ok if you keep it very minimal. I am not sure about the OM60x engines, but OM 61x and OM621 engines were assembled with no pan gasket and no sealer. I've never had a 60x pan off and have not yet read that section of the cd. >Interesting, I went with RTV because of the discussion surrounding OK >Don's replacement. :) So the consensus is Permatex, at least with a >mostly straight pan (?). > >Thanks, >-Tim > >-----Original Message----- > >From: MG <trainpain2...@yahoo.com> >Subj: Re: [MBZ] OM603 oil pan breech >Date: Fri Oct 22, 2010 8:49 am >Size: 873 bytes >To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> > >Permatex form-a-gasket #2.
