One of the wonderful things about the 110/111 chassis is how
wonderfully the 2-55 air conditioning system works. I drove 500-
1000 miles regularly with the windows rolled down and my hearing is
still largely intact, at least I believe it is unharmed by 2-55 A/C.
The wings on these cars and the 108 and 123, allow great ventilation
without noise. Does the 116 have wings? I think so.
Many times in cooler weather I put the heater on with the wing or
window open. The 123 is a nice compromise, with wings, and also a
functioning A/c, even if the compressor is a GM type.
In the 123, 124 and 126, putting the RR window down is the most
pleasant way to drive I have found when the temps allow.

The thing about that ad that really strikes a chord with me is the
reference to driving with the wind in your face. It seems to me that
on any car newer than about 1990, you can't roll down the windows at
speed and get just a comfortable breeze. On one of our daily drivers,
a 2002 Camry, opening the windows at anything over 15 or 20 mph
creates both turbulence sufficient to throw papers around the inside
of the car, and a resonance inside the cabin that I find physically
painful. Someone here who knows about the fluid dynamics of surfaces
(laminar flow?) can probably speak with more authority, but I think
I've read that a car can be designed so that the air passes over its
surface smoothly with the windows closed or with the windows open, but
not both, and the manufacturers now choose the former, figuring that
all new cars come standard with A/C and you'll always be using that,
never opning a window when actually in motion.
