Yep, thats canvas. Must have still been available for a few years for the rest of the world. MBNA never brought any into the USA AFaIK.

Well, take a look at the original ad, which has more pictures. Perhaps
this was a special order option. My father used to own a Pontoon which
had the same large canvass sunroof. I'll try to attach a picture from
the original ad.

Nope! 250S had the steel sunroof. I drove a 67 250S and a 68 250
SE. I believe all sunroofs after 1963 or there abouts were steel. I am
pretty sure 61 VW had the canvas type. I don't remember seeing an MB
with a sunroof in 61 or 62. I think any sunroof would have been steel
in the 111/112 chassis (starting in 1959) and in the 600.
There were a few second generation 110 (after 1965) that had steel
sunroofs in NA. (I can't say about europe)

I believe what you are seeing is a smoke color plastic sunroof
deflector.

The car in the ad appears to have the huge Webasto canvas sunroof; I
used to own a '63 Beetle with similar huge sunroof, and I could stand
through the sunroof and drive that car. Left foot on gas peddle, right

foot in passenger foot well, left hand on steering wheel, and wave to
the adoring crowds as I motored by...

The thing about that ad that really strikes a chord with me is the
reference to driving with the wind in your face. It seems to me that
on any car newer than about 1990, you can't roll down the windows at
speed and get just a comfortable breeze. On one of our daily drivers,
a 2002 Camry, opening the windows at anything over 15 or 20 mph creates

both turbulence sufficient to throw papers around the inside of the
car, and a resonance inside the cabin that I find physically painful. Someone here who knows about the fluid dynamics of surfaces (laminar
flow?) can probably speak with more authority, but I think I've read
that a car can be designed so that the air passes over its surface
smoothly with the windows closed or with the windows open, but not
both, and the manufacturers now choose the former, figuring that all
new cars come standard with A/C and you'll always be using that, never
opning a window when actually in motion.
