Lots of the folks over on Peach Parts advocate the lower radiator hose heater. I dislike it for 2 reasons. #1. They're usually 1000w, the MB block heater is 400w. #2. Loads of heat will be wasted through the radiator. With the MB block heater most of the heat will stay in the engine.
If I weren't going to use a real block heater I'd get a magnetic stick on oil pan heater (actually I have one at camp come to think of it). If I lived where it got seriously cold (Alaska for instance) I'd get the lower radiator hose heater, the block heater and a battery heater. I'm told this is commonly referred to as "The Fairbanks package" -Curt Date: Mon, 1 Nov 2010 12:39:38 -0400 From: "Gerry Archer" <arche...@embarqmail.com> To: "Mercedes Discussion List" <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: Re: [MBZ] W123 - 240D - Engine heater plug Message-ID: <7bdad8ccfded40e4a2f42919ff878...@pc466116028214> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=response Wonder if you could snake a piece of tubing down into the drain plug area through one of the ports on the front of the engine and then suck out the remaining water/AF? ..................................................... I once used a heater that was installed in the bottom radiator hose (IIRC) in a '67 200D. It worked well in a high mileage engine in Florida where the temperature never got below the 20F's.
