What is the tube for? What do the holes do?
I think it's how the fine-filtered oil (the bypass filter) gets back to the pan. The big part of the filter, the coarse in-line filter, is in series with the oil flow to the bearings.
Can the tube be removed from the cover?
It probably screws in, but might be a press fit. I'd be real careful there! Unless you have a spare on hand, of course. Can you manually run a long drill bit up it?
