"How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" had a description and great drawing of the
technique. In fact there are loads of great drawings in that book which is a
great read even if you don't have an aircooled VW.
No you can't borrow my copy.

The tip about being unable to overtorque a 6mm with your thumb over
the end came from a German at a Deutz Engine Service school.
