I'm not sure thats true, what is in my car now is a matched set from my '83 
240D into the '78 240D and I've always had my pedal level problem. My theory is 
that the rod goes with the pedal assembly...

Rusty sez (and I forgot to call him yesterday, drat!) that MB superceeded the 2 
different clutch MCs with just one and 2 different rods depending on which car 
you have.

But not sub-assemblies.

As a pair, the clutch master cylinder and pedal rod can be
swapped with another.  But only as a match pair.

Rod from one and a cylinder from another could result in a pedal
to piston distance mismatch.
