Check out your state's guidelines on this. My son was hit (other driver's fault) while driving our 84 300D turbo. Their insurance co. lowballed us on the appraisal. I researched and eventually got them to do a different appraisal that gave us fair value.
As another stated the appraisal should be based on comparable recent sales. Recent restoration costs can also be used as evidence with a car of this age. Good luck!
