I suspect that perfect cylinder balance at idle would make it harder to stall.

The real cure, IMO, is the hand throttle that MBZ quit installing after 1979.

On my '79 SD, I hold the pedal down slightly, turn the hand throttle up all the way, start the car, put it in gear, and head down the road. A mile or two later I turn the hand throttle off. Never a problem with stalling or stumbling.
