I dont see how, maybe it was just a coincidence, or maybe they drained the diff for some strange reason and did not fill it back up? Did they swap the diff as well to match the 85 engine/trans? Thats the deal is the 85 has different diff to go with the different trans. If so, swap your old one back in. Dont you have a parts car? Cant remember but if so just swap it out. I had a BUNCH of diffs but I sent them all to the crusher.

it in neutral because there is no load on it.  Even going down the road if

Then it has to be in the front of the transmission, or before
the transmission.

That rules out drive shaft, carrier bearing, differential, axle,
wheel bearings, hub caps, and so on.
