Of course, the on-phone assistant can call a locksmith as necessary.

'Just talked to OnStar tech rep. According to tech rep, the FMV system can work as a stand-alone system with only 12V DC to it; 'would provide crash response w/emer. assist, hands-free phone, stolen vehicle assist and navigation (GPS); 'would not provide lock/unlock assist, or other interaction with the car, of course.

Yes, that's right. Like I said in original post, "MY cell phone serves me very well, but SWMBO won't carry hers." Her phone is of no use to either one of us lying on the kitchen cabinet. Oh, I think the collision detector, BTW, for the FMV system is in the mirror assembly - not air bag-related.

Some of their big selling points are the ability to detect airbag deployment, remote unlock, alarm detection etc. I think without these features it does nothing more than my cellphone does already.

Oh, I got it - On Board Diagnostics. I wouldn't expect OnStar FMV on a 124 or 126 to diagnose or interact with anything in the car ('cept the user) - 'just provide emergency communications, GPS and, maybe, locator.

So what is OBDII?
If the OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) is a stand-alone unit, why does it need anything other than 12V DC? I'll try to find out from "horse's mouth."

More likely that these older cars don't have ODBII?

'Just noticed that GM's OnStar system is now available for installation on other vehicles; entire system seems to be in a replacement mirror. MB 124's and 126's are not shown as being "compatible," likely 'cause OnStar engineers haven't considered it. My 124 and 126 don't have any automatic system that would be "compromised" or affected by OnStar. I probably won't install it; cell phone works fine for me, but SWMBO won't carry hers. The analog phone installed in the 126 when new worked great for SWMBO while it was in service, but analog was discontinued a few years ago. I'd feel more comfortable, especially when SWMBO is driving alone, if the cars had a "built-in" emergency com system. Like I said, I probably won't do it, but I'd bet I can - it's at least interesting to consider. Anybody know of one of these systems, or the like, installed on a 124 or 126?
