Subject: [MBZ] 40 years of MB Dieselling
It is anniversary time. 40 years ago, I bought a 1962 190Dc. It was
battleship gray with bright red interior, including a rolled and pleated
bench seat. It had four wheel drum brakes, and no brake booster. And of
course there was no air conditioning and no power steering.
But it had character. It had the 4 speed on the column and the vertical
speedometer. It had the 12 gallon tank, with the reserve light. It was
always ready to go anywhere, so long as I could get the battery charged
enough to start the first time.
In 1963, the 110s got a brake booster, a 16 gal tank that increased the
range to ~500 miles and front disk brakes. But with my little 12 gallon
tank, I could fill it for less than $3. $10 would fund an entire weekend
within 500 miles. A tank out, a tank back and some money left over for
food. Times and prices have changed but an MB diesel is still reliable
transportation.
