For those of you in states where Wells Fargo is testing the $3 debit card fee - I'm wondering if the fee is for having a debit card at all, if you swipe it just once such as at a Wells branch, or if the fee only kicks in if you use it for a merchant purchase? Are there ways to avoid the fee by keeping a certain minimum balance or having a certain account type?
I have a Wells Fargo account in a state that doesn't have the fee yet. I'm just wondering what's coming to us.
