It is amazing how many people think they are smarter than the whole
engineering staff at MB/DB. Even though we sometimes grouse about
how some things were done, overall, the 107 through 126 series of
cars from 1959 until 1991 are very well designed/made. One of my
hobbies is trying to figure out what they were thinking when they did
one thing one way. (Sometimes I think I have the right answer.
Other times, I just shake my head, because I can't figure out what
would have made them do something that seems stupid from a later
perspective.)
I thought a lot about trying to add a turbo to the 4cyl Diesels, but
never did it, because I could never figure out a way to make the
engine as well designed as what later came out as the OM 617 turbo.
(Yes, I know there were bolt-on kits, but none addressed piston
cooling and other issues.)
Having driven old Diesels before ADA/ALDA, I really like what the
ALDA does, and it never even occurred to me to take it off and throw
it away.
Sounds like what I have seen around here in some of the rural areas.
These kids (and adults) have jacked up pickup trucks with diesels in
them that have these huge high rise exhaust pipes.
It appears that the "in" thing for these trucks to do is smoke
excessively on acceleration - I am assuming this is due to some
serious over fueling or messing with the injection or computer
system.
They will take off from a standing start and blow voluminous amounts of smoke.

Good way to dilute the oil with unburned fuel and clog the rings

year doing this by "overchipping" it.
The ALDA is there to control the fuel mixture. Taking it off is
sorta like punching a hole in the carb float to get more fuel.

Subject: [MBZ] ALDA delete - was ChowdaQ 2011 report
There was an '87 wagon at the Rusty-Q with this mod (ALDA
removed) but I did not
get to see it run. There are more than a few folks on various
forums who have
done this and promote it (at least last time I checked, which was
a year or more
ago). Personally I would not do this. According to reports,
more power and
better throttle response (especially at low RPM) is the result,
the trade off is
lower fuel economy, more smoke, loss of safety device (over-boost
protection
valve and plumbing)
Very respectfully,

Removing the ALDA provides full fuel all the time, which means
full power, but
more smoke and no safety if the turbo waste gate fails (melted pistons may
result).

Um, the ALDA works on pressure from the intake manifold, pulling up to
increase fuel density in the mixture. Raising the ALDA on washers would
enrich this mixture, therefor releasing the ALDA all together would not
allow any enrichment at all under boost. ?
Knowledgeable people please supply corrections.

The '82 300TD 5 speed (modified) had an electrical connector where I
>>>> thought the ALDA should be. If the butcher did not know about the
ALDA's importance in enriching the mixture when turbo takes over and
wanted to keep the oil in the IP, the "leftover" sensor/switch to
close the hole makes sense, kinda.
On the highway 80 odd horses vs 140-ish should be quite noticeable.
Random firing of the few live synapses is strange, not so?
Doesn't removal of the ALDA set the fuel to full rich?
I was thinking that the ALDA pushed down to limit the travel of
something, and raised under boost.
I know that on the 603 you can increase fuel by putting washers under
the ALDA body to raise it. Spudman (Dave GSXR) did that on his 1987.
