So why would it just do this all the sudden? It was fine before this
incident. I could see no fuel leaks or anything, nothing that looked
loose (lose). Does this sort of thing just happen spontaneously?

fuel line or the primer pump. Try cycling the primer pump like 50 or 75 times,
if the sound/effort changes, that's your problem, you'll need to crank for
another 30 seconds or so to get her started.
