Check for a leaking line at the suction side of the lift pump -- this will show up as excessive bubbling in the clear filter. Not just fuel surging, but bubbles going through.

If the IP is full of air, it won't run, and cracked rubber under the factory fabric covering on fuel lines will stop an MB diesel dead in it's tracks.

Ditto for a leaking hand pump, by the way, and yes, they can suddenly leak.

So why would it just do this all the sudden? It was fine before this incident. I could see no fuel leaks or anything, nothing that looked loose (lose). Does this sort of thing just happen spontaneously?

My guess would be a leak allowing air into the injection pump, either a rubber fuel line or the primer pump. Try cycling the primer pump like 50 or 75 times, if the sound/effort changes, that's your problem, you'll need to crank for another 30 seconds or so to get her started.
